Small Business Startup Ideas – Make Money From the Home

At the time of the creation of this post, I am enjoying full-time RV living in my RV.  The media is presenting nothing other than a crashing world economy, COVID-19 issues, mandatory lockdowns, and hoarding going on at stores.

But, it did not take a crisis like this to get me thinking about alternative ways to make money from home!

If people are lucky enough to be able to make money from the home working their job in their home setting, then things are not so bad for them.  But, if people’s normal work involves a service industry where the job must be done outside the home as it involves contact with the public, then those folks are out of work.

Since the statistics show that a high percentage of people work from paycheck to paycheck, this can be devastating for their financial situation.  The ability to have the money to purchase the day to day supplies they need to live may not be available without a paycheck coming in from their job.

Wouldn’t it be nice if people who have jobs that require they work outside the home had a way to make money from the home?  Are there ways to be able to create income with nothing more than a computer and some personalized training?

How is This Situation Affecting HMRVI Corporation?

HMRVI Corporation is a home-based business entity and it has been so since it was created in 2014.  Howard and Pam run their business and make money from the comfort of their RV.  Even before that, a large percentage of their income has come from activities related to working at home.

In the past few days, even given the economic upheaval, when accounts for HMRVI are viewed, items are still being sold and money is still being made!   For example, someone bought a scope for their rifle.  Someone bought a roof sealant product.  HMRVI does not even mention these products in their services that are offered!

Other purchases in the past few days were a dehumidifier, an infrared space heater, and a battery charger just to name a few.  These are some products that have been mentioned on our website.

And, nothing was done to create this activity other than work was put in months ago to set up systems for products to be sold and money to flow into an account.  How is this possible?

As mentioned in our How it All Started page on this website, Howard and Pam have had an entrepreneurial mindset since their twenties.  To allow someone else to dictate their income was not something that was going to lead to work-related satisfaction.

So, from our story, you can see that over the years, and because of advancements in technology, running a small business and making money from home has become so much easier than it used to be.  There are many ways that a person can operate a small business from their home!  It just takes finding something that you are passionate about and developing a business around that passion.,

So, depending on your skill set, there are lots of options!  But, as I counsel people in business sessions that I teach, having a home-based business should be one that you are excited about!

As mentioned earlier, Pam and I love the RV lifestyle.  When we decided to adopt the full-time RV lifestyle and had sold our home and non-RV related business, we still knew we needed to start another business.  But what could we do living in an RV?  That’s when we came across the idea of marketing products that we use in our RV lifestyle.

But how would we set that up?  I knew nothing about website creation and online marketing back in 2011.  So we put moving forward with the idea for a little while.  My ignorance, fear, and paradigm prevented me from moving forward.  Then in 2013, with a good income, but no deductions, including no business deductions, we had a BIG tax bill!  It was now time to take our idea more seriously!

I went looking for a way to create income online by creating my own website and store that I could sell RV products.  My idea was that if I had personal experience with products I use and like it would be easy to talk about them and share my opinion so that when people searched for them, they would find my website.

With that idea in mind, I found a platform that would be able to teach me how to set up a website, host the website, choose the right website URL, how to launch the website, choose mobile device efficient website templates, understand keywords and SEO, how to use Google analytics, how to write website content, social engagement and marketing, and all the other tasks that are needed to launch a successful online business.

Launch a Money-Making Website!

So that is what I started to learn how to do!  I wanted to launch a website that would create income twenty-four-seven, three-sixty-five while working from the home.

Website hosting services range in price from a few dollars a month to almost one-hundred dollars, or possibly more, a month for a full-featured service.  It really depends on what you want for your website and how much storage that website will need.  In today’s online world, web server security features are a big consideration in choosing a hosting service.  If they are not truly secure than a website will be subject to persistent hacking and website downtime.

But then there is learning how to do all that is necessary to get a website set up and launched so that it attracts the attention of the search engines once it is out there in the online world.  Anyone can launch a website.  That can take five minutes to do on GoDaddy.  But until best SEO (search engine optimization) practices are adopted, the website will just sit there without traffic.

CONFUSION?

Once you start digging into all this you will start to feel inadequate in the online world.  There is so much to know!  That is why I chose to find a kind of online university that would walk me through the process.  I am a visual learner so I wanted more of a step-by-step video process to take me through the process of setting up a website from before actually launching it through the process of building it into a large full-featured, page-one ranking website.  No website hosting services offer that kind of service, for free to start, and forty-nine dollars a month thereafter!

Any hosting company will be happy to set a website up for you, but that will cost big dollars.  Plus once created you don’t have complete control of the website to constantly add content and change it at will.  I have to go into my website at least once a week just to update plug-ins, respond to questions, and add new material.  This is what leads to an engaging and page-one ranking website!

I hear so many other people with websites sharing how theirs got hacked, that they get constant spam comments to their website and a host of other issues due to insecure servers.  Website security is essential in the hosting world!  Hackers constantly try to take over websites to use them for their own gain, and they can do that without you evening knowing it.  Others just want to wreak havoc on your website and cause downtime.  They may even try to gain access to your personal details.

When I started my website, I began by using a free trial to test out all the features and training modules that were available.  Within a few days, I upgraded my membership to a discounted premium 30-day offer where I could continue to build my website and take advantage of the awesome training.

My chosen niche market was to share information about living the full time RV living and products that we use and like.  I am an affiliate with companies like Amazon, Outdoorsy, Workamper News, Techno RV, and others.  When I discuss a product that I use and like, basically a product review, and I include links that go to the affiliate company website that is tracked back to me, and people buy products, I make a small percentage from the sale.  It can range from three to ten percent.

Sales can range from a few dollars to thousands.  It just depends on the products I discuss and that people decide to buy.  But here’s the cool thing!  Once they are on the affiliate company’s website, it does not matter what they buy.  I get a commission from the sale because they visited their website due to my referral.  Some affiliate companies even hold that referral link in a record for a period of seven to thirty days.  That means if your website visitor comes back to the referral site and buys, you get the commission for the sale!

How cool is that!  This is the kind of income I have been enjoying for over six years.  And in addition to that, my websites are also a portal for other business activities that I choose to offer.  Some are outside the home, but they pay much larger dollars.  But, these opportunities occur because of my website business.

How it all Started

The Early Years

Here I was, a young twenty-something living the dream as a ski-bum in the mountains of Colorado.  I was not rich financially but I was sure having fun!  Instead of choosing the traditional business path after college, I escaped to the mountains to take it easy for a while.  I had developed a passion for skiing so I decided why not go where the skiing is great: John Denver country!

Well, I made it as far as Summit County.  I was only going to stay for a little while before deciding what I was really going to do with my life.  I knew it was not to sit in an office for the next forty-something years!

Working in a ski resort I quickly learned that I was going to be a terrible employee.  I had already worked my way through college as a head waiter who successfully trained others, so I knew I had a skill set that I might be able to capitalize on.  I also knew that I did not want to work for other people because I always felt I could do things better if they let me.  Pretty arrogant, eh?  Well, that’s a twenty-something for you!

I enjoyed my time working in the ski industry and living in Summit County in those early years.  I made a decent wage, had a nice mobile home, worked at night, skied all day and in the summer mountain biked instead of skiing.

But, at that young age, I still knew that working for someone else was not going to be acceptable for me.  I don’t know where that came from.  None of my family members were ever entrepreneurial.  I just knew that I had to find a way to create my own source of income.  Well, when the timing is right, and you are looking, things always seem to show up.

One day an acquaintance in the mobile home park I was living knocked on my door.  He said a few complimentary things about me and passed me an envelope with a few brochures and a cassette tape.  Having known him I thought he was pretty sharp, so I accepted the information and promised to review it.

I listened to the tape and read the information.  I suddenly realized that my goal of being free from a job might have been answered.  I wanted to make money from the home!  I wanted to be able to work when I wanted to and play when I wanted to.  After all, I already had a taste of what life could be like.

Make Money From the Home

I got back to my acquaintance and asked for more information.  He was probably thinking, “Oh boy, I got a live one!”  He told me there was going to be a local meeting to discuss the opportunity.  I was open to that.  So I attended the meeting and was exposed to a company called Amway.  I had never heard of it.  I thought their marketing plan was brilliant and that this would be perfect for me.

All I had to do was share the opportunity with others, hold and attend meetings, and buy products from my own company.  Easy enough, right?  Well, what I did not know was that not everyone was excited about Amway as I was.  I had never heard of it.  I had never heard of multi-level marketing.

I stayed involved with Amway for a few years and did okay before moving on.  But, the best thing that came from the association was what I learned as far as personal development.

You see, if you are going to create a large income from a business of your own, you may have to change your mindset based on whatever your paradigm may be.  What is a paradigm?  It is a collection of internal thoughts that you act on that dictate your feelings, actions, and results.  Very powerful stuff!

I was not raised with a mindset where lack and limitations existed, but some people are.  They are told that their lot in life is to be poor.  Others are told they will never amount to anything nor achieve any kind of success.  When this happens the only way to overcome that negativity is to reprogram the mind through the reading of materials that can help to change the damaging paradigm.  I will talk more about this elsewhere on this website.

So, having the right wealth mindset I moved on from Amway and continued to operate HOW Enterprises.  My business moniker was if you want to know how to make money, ask me how.

During this time I met Pam at the ski resort I was working at.  During that time period, we skied all day and worked all night.  We did that for three years, and by the time I was approaching my late twenties, I had proposed to Pam and we got married.  She was the first person I sponsored when I was introduced to Amway.  She had the same dreams I did.

So there I am in my Amway-suit, bought from my own business, and looking so stylish with my new bride!  To my right is my Amway sponsor.  It was a small wedding in our local church in Summit County.  And so our life of searching for the next business venture started.

During the Amway adventure, we were introduced to the idea of RV life.  We had met several business associates that had really nice RVs.  We are talking about nice Prevost bus conversions.  We don’t know why but the idea of life on the road really sounded perfect for us.  I imagined traveling around the country visiting business associates and writing that travel off on my taxes because I was traveling with a business purpose.

So Pam and I started looking at RVs every time we traveled out of the mountains to Denver, Colorado.  We would stop and look at the RVs and imagined what our life would be like traveling the highways of the United States in our home on wheels.  I imagined driving it sitting in that big comfortable captain’s chair, looking out the huge windshield and enjoying the changing view.  It was like a giant movie screen with a 180-degree view.

Here is the front cover of the brochure I had on my dream board in my home office back in the early 1990s.  I would look at my dream board while I was at home on the phone looking for new clients.  My vision of my life on the road in my RV home was so real.  I had spent time sitting in the front seat of the Itasca at the RV dealership looking out the windshield thinking about all the great places we would see.   I saw myself driving the RV, eating a snack if I wanted one, having a cup of french roast coffee, anything I wanted because everything I needed was with me.

And Pam and I would travel to places where we would be making money and take advantage of the tax benefits of writing off our travels while creating a fantastic lifestyle.  How did I come to this reality?  Well, I noticed all those areas on the 1040 Federal Income Tax form that looked like ways that I could reduce my adjusted gross income.

Advance the story twenty years and in that time I had owned an S Corporation, a franchise corporation, and worked with several other network marketing companies.  But all these required other people to help achieve my success.  I got tired of trying to get other people to do their part!

The dream of the RV lifestyle started in 2002, on a part-time basis, and by 2008 and after thirty-five thousand miles in rented RVs, the full-time RV lifestyle started.  There was no business entity at this point as the economic downturn of 2008 took out my used vehicle restoration business.

In 2013, with no business deductions and moderate-income, our tax bill was hard to swallow that year!  I had the discussion with Pam that unless we find another business idea, our lives as full-time RVers is not going to include business write-offs or personal conversion expenses.  You see, after twenty-four years of my entrepreneurial mindset, she finally said no more.  Then I showed her the tax bill, and I won.  She said what next?

I told her that I wanted to start a business in an industry that was brand new and that nobody knew anything about it.  She said sure.  What is it?  So I took her to meet some people that could explain it better than me.  After a week of learning about it, she was on board.  The best part is that it involved the RV lifestyle and fulfilling the goals that we had envisioned years ago.

After creating a business plan and looking at the potential of the market HMRVI Corporation was born in 2014.

Advance time to now and the dreams that were perpetuated in the mid-1980s have come to pass.  In fact, they are even better than first envisioned.  Not only does business involve travel in the RV but it is in the RV industry!

RV Inspection Services: Motor Home Inspection Specialists

Whether new or used, an RV purchase is a significant financial decision!  When RVs are new, they come from the manufacturer, and issues must be addressed before a new owner takes possession of the vehicle.  That is just the nature of the industry.

When a used RV is being purchased, many issues may need to be addressed. If the used RV is at a dealership, the dealership likely did not have the time to thoroughly inspect it to address possible issues.

If the used RV is handled as a private sale, then there are even greater odds that issues will need to be addressed before a purchase price is negotiated!

HMRVI Corporation has been offering RV inspections since 2014.

After that amount of time, Howard and Pam are more sure than ever that the process that they use to evaluate RVs is thorough, the time spent with the RV is adequate to identify issues that are present, and the inspection report that is generated is valuable information that an RV buyer needs to help make an educated buying decision.

There are many types of RVs out there.  People can purchase towable type RVs like travel trailers or a 5th wheel RV.  Class A, B, and C-type RVs are for those wanting to own a driveable RV.

Given these facts, a detailed RV inspection can take eight or more hours.  These RV inspections are very detailed and involve evaluating as many as five hundred things during the detailed analysis process.  The RV Inspection Report is the Purple Monkey Locator!

HMRVI Corporation is a member of the NRVIA, the National Recreational Vehicle Inspectors Association. They are the Former National Trainers for the certified RV inspector training classes in Texas.

They taught the inspectors how to evaluate RVs methodically using the NRVIA’s Standards of Practice while adhering to a strict Code of Ethics.

Oil and Coolant Analysis Services

RV Inspectors can’t disassemble engines to see what’s happening inside them. However, they can take oil and coolant samples from them as long as the fluid has been in use for sufficient time.

These samples are sent to a national lab to be evaluated to see what is happening inside an engine, generator, or transmission. Since a motorized RV’s engine, transmission, and generator account for a large portion of the overall cost, why risk not knowing what happens with these critical components when purchasing a used RV?

Fluid Analysis is affordable and allows the RV buyer to get a virtual view of the engine, transmission, and generator inside.  Oil and coolant analysis add diagnostics that can’t be found elsewhere. Think of this as healthcare for an RV:

• Tells when oil and coolants have experienced contamination
• Indicates signs of thermal or mechanical breakdown
• Any indication of internal part wear
• Problem indicators long before the problems arise
• Reduced chance of road calls, expensive repairs, or lost travel time.
• Improves the reliability of the motorhome.

Oil and Coolant Analysis Before and After the Sale!

What Does Oil Analysis Tell Me?   Oil analysis measures additive levels, wear metals, contaminants (such as water or internal coolant or fuel leaks), soot levels, viscosity, oxidation, and nitration.

First, the oil is checked for viscosity loss (thinned-out oil) and thermal breakdown (too much heat).  Oil samples are also checked for signs of fuel and coolant caused by faulty injectors or leaking head gaskets and for changes in nitration level that may indicate improper fuel/air mixtures.

All of this can be checked as part of the analysis, plus any early stages of wear on internal parts can also be detected.

What Does Coolant Analysis Tell Me?   Coolant analysis measures glycol content, additive levels, Freeze Point, Boiling Point, total hardness, and dissolved solid levels (mineral content).

These tests tell you everything you need to know to fully evaluate your engine cooling system, and they will tell you if or when an engine coolant change is needed.   Detailed test reports will be emailed directly to you.  If you don’t have an email account, reports are sent to your mailbox through the US Postal Service.

Test reports are “user friendly” and color-coded, so it’s easy to spot problems if any exist.  Color codes help to indicate the overall severity of the sample using a zero to four rating scale.  A Severity Rating of zero indicates that everything is okay and no maintenance is required.

On the other hand, a Severity Rating of four indicates immediate action is necessary.  The color on the Severity Rating scale matches the data, so it’s easy to spot the problem (test result) that led to the overall Severity Rating.

The report also lists comments and recommendations instructing you and your service tech on what was found and what maintenance or checks are needed.   These are all great things to know when so much money is involved in the motorized parts of an RV!

New RV Owner Walk-Through Services

RVs are very complex!  They have multiple electrical systems, a propane system, two types of battery banks, two water systems, and many features unknown to most people living in a “sticks and bricks” home.   A home on wheels is much more complicated than a house!

How many people get a walkthrough when they purchase a house?  Not usually.  You are handed the keys, and you are assumed to know how to live in them.  This is usually true unless it has complicated low-voltage electrical systems that control the house.

Well, RVs are like homes on steroids! When purchased, they require someone to spend hours helping the new owner understand how to operate the RV. When an RV is purchased new, this is the RV dealership’s job. When it is purchased used, this should be the responsibility of the RV dealership or the person you are buying the RV from.

They may not even know everything about it!   Neither is usually enough to help the new RV owner feel comfortable living in their new RV home. This is where HMRVI Corporation can assist you!

Howard and Pam have developed the skills to present on many RV and small business topics.  Whether talking to a group of twenty or hundreds, they can keep attendees entertained while educating them on the topics they present.  They like to call their presentation style “edutainment!”  His presentations are educational and entertaining.

RV Technician Services

Howard is an RVIA/RVDA Registered Technician. He gained that certification years ago to improve his skills as an RV inspector and client consultant. However, he does not offer technician services for pay because his full-time RV lifestyle does not allow him to stock and carry all the necessary parts to solve problems quickly.
